Opening hours of the Roman Museum:
Winter: 10 am - 12 noon and 1 pm to 4 pm
Summer: 10 am - 5 pm, closed on Monday mornings.

How much ?
Free of charge - with the exception of the Roman Museum in the Roman villa:
Adults Fr. 5.--
Children Fr. 3.--
Time needed ?
Plan on at least a half day.
Age ?
Children as from 6 years of age.
Augusta Raurica attracts over 100.000 visitors a year, more than half of which are children and teenagers - and this fact has many reasons.

The widely spread "open air museum" is an ideal destination for a full day family excursion - offering much, costing very little. The largest part of the Roman ruins, which have been excavated and conserved during the past few decades are freely accessible. The Roman Museum has prepared a brochure, which describes a number of round tours. Those who do not limit themselves to only seeing the imposing Roman Theatre near the entrance, will discover many hidden treasures. In the erstwhile city centre which, before its destruction by a severe earthquake and the slow downfall of the Roman Empire, once housed upto 20.000 inhabitans. One can still find some remnants of the Market place (Forum), the sacred temple area, and also a part of the sewage canal, which wasmade accessible a short while ago.

Recommended would be a short sidestep to the Roman Castle in neighbouring Kaiseraugst with its thermal baths, the second amphitheatre in the south of the city and the reconstructed Roman villa. There one finds the legendary silver treasure, which was rediscovered by chance in 1962.
