| Although somewhat in the shadow of the museum metropolis of Basel city, in recent years, Basel-Country has seen the growth of a flourishing museum culture. Above the more than three dozen exhibition sites and galleries that are mainly dedicated to the countryside roots of the Basel-Country villages, towers the Cantonal museum in the Old Zeughaus in Liestal with its always-original permanent and visiting exhibits. The efforts of a fully-employed team of museum educationalists mean that great emphasis is placed on the tailoring of exhibits and their treatments to the needs of children and, thus, the family. Special exhibitions on current topics, such as relations between the sexes or the various youth movements in Basel-Country make a particularly rewarding excursion on a rainy Sunday afternoon. A side-trip to the upper stories of the Old Zeughaus can be recommended unreservedly. These house three permanent exhibits which invite you to take a trip through the nature and history of the still-young country canton. The display of the rich collection of silk ribbons, for example, is linked through its impressive presentation to the circumstances in which, in earlier days, the peasant home-workers toiled to produce their luxury goods for the “Ribbon Men” in the city. No less moving is the “Traces of Culture” exhibit in which an old rubbish pit is used to demonstrate that the borders between useful objects, rubbish and valuable museum pieces are always fluid. |
