| There is truly no lack of vantage points in the hilly Basel-Country. Hardly any other place can offer, as well as an impressive panorama right over to the Blüemlisalp, as much entertainment as can be found as the Fluh, above Sissach. When the weather is fine, large crowds gather to enjoy themselves in the meadow around the Sissacher Fluh mountain restaurant. Here you will find walking parties who have climbed from Sissach or Wintersingen and are making a halt at the restaurant to enjoy a snack or just a cold beer. Others have ridden on the Post Bus or in their own cars close to the Fluh to enjoy the generous open spaces around the beer-garden where folk events are held regularly throughout the summer. Sissacher Fluh is particularly interesting because of its mysterious past. As early as prehistoric times, our forefathers were drawn to this exposed spot. The remains of a fortified wall have been found around the high plateau and no-one knows exactly when it was built, by whom and for what purpose. This ancient fortification and some medieval walls were excavated by unemployed people during the second World War and since then, along with the ruins of Bischofstein catle which can be reached easily from the path to the Fluh, have invited us to adventurous journeys of discovery into the past. |
