| Children are not the only ones to be absolutely fascinated by these tinkling miracles. Even adults stand and stare when tiny birds open their beaks and twitter, graceful ballerinas turn their pirouettes or a mischievous alpine shepherd empties his wooden beaker with twinkling eyes and a contented smile – all of them automatons driven by clockwork. The dentist’s chair was certainly a useful invention. When a child sat on it, happy melodies played and the dentist could be forgotten for a moment. Heinrich Weiss, the founder of the museum, worked for decades collecting and restoring mechanical musical instruments, music boxes, barrel organs and musical automatons right up to enormous fairground organs. Recently, the museum’s founder has earned the recognition of the Federation. The musical automaton collection has been classified as an external site of the Swiss National Museum in Zurich. The federal millions that came with the status allowed the museum in Seewen to be greatly extended in 1999. |
