The mineral water canyon

A hike from Grellingen to Meltingen How to get there ?
Starting at the train station of Grellingen the hike of appox. 9 km takes one to Meltingen. Return journey either by postal coach or by foot.

When ?
Spring to automn (the route is often iced over in winter)

Duration ?
A minimum of half a day should be reserved for this excursion

Age ?
For children as of 8 years of age.
The Kaltbrunnen valley awaits you with a particularly adventurous walk, suitable for children, as it leads you from the notorious “Chessiloch” near Grellingen up to Meltingen.

The first stop is called for as early as the Chessiloch, which can be reached in 20 minutes walk from Grellingen station. On the cliff wall of the Enge, through which the Birs must force its passage, soldiers on active service have left behind a galery of insignia that will certainly cause some comment.

There is nothing of the boring Sunday afternoon trudge about the climb up trough the Kaltbrunnen valley that follows. Here are dark caverns with traces from the Stone Age and a stream that finds its way through side branches, weirs and a small waterfall to the Birs.

After a good hour, the valley widens slightly and we arrive in Meltingen, the source of the eponymous mineral water. If you have not had enough of water on this trip, you can drink freely of the water from the well in the village. Like Eptinger mineral water from the upper Basel-Country region, the water is marketed far beyond the borders of its home canton.
