A daring climb to the play ground

How to get there ?
Postal coach connection as far as the village of Hofstetten, from there a short but fairly steep hiking path up to the Bergmatte.

When ?
Restaurant open all year round
Mondays and Tuesdays closed

Duration ?
Varied and interesting full day excursion
The climb through the Cheelengraben gorge up to the Hofstetter Bergmatte is one of the timeless classic family walks in north-west Switzerland.

Children love this walk mainly for its adventure and variety, both during the walk itself and at its destination. Very soon after leaving the car park in Hofstetten, where the ever-steeper climb begins, the path takes a daring turn that is a surprising departure from the usual conditions found in the Jura. Staying close to the water, we are lead up steps and along wooden walkways through the wildly romantic gorge to the high plateau on which lies the Bergmatte and its restaurant and many barbecue pits and play areas.

With a picnic, a barbecue, a circular walking tour and a small zoo at the restaurant, it is easy to spend an afternoon in the refreshing open air. And anyone who finds the climb through the gorge with rucksack on their back too much effort can drive, armed with deckchair and cool-box, as far as the Bergmatte restaurant.
