What child has not dreamed of spending the night in a genuine castle? Here is your chance, and at a reasonable price, too.

Rotberg castle in the Schwarzbuben area was built in the first half of the 13th century and served as a hunting lodge until the 16th. After its sale to canton Solothurn, the castle fell into disuse. We can read in a chronicle as early as 1645 that the castle has become a ruin. It was bought in 1919 by the consumer association of Basel Town and Basel-Country and restored in the 1930s by unemployed young people.

From the youth hostel, there is a wonderful view of the Sundgau as the castle lies in the north-eastern exclave of canton Solothurn. As well as cycle tours and walks in the border country, a visit to the neighbouring Mariastein pilgrimage church with its grotto and monastery can be recommended.
