Colmar in numbers

Prefecture of the Upper Rhine (68) - Mayor: M. Gilbert MEYER

Population : Colmar : 67,163 inhabitants (census of 1999) Urban area of Colmar: 93,267 inhabitants (8 municipalities combined) Greater Colmar: 196,915 inhabitants (101 municipalities combined) Area: 6,657 hectares Density: 1,009 inhab./km² Languages spoken: French and Alsatian Situation: Geographic coordinates: latitude 48°05 north, 7°21 longitude east of Greenwich. Altitude: 197 metres. Climate and precipitation: Between the region of Colmar, which is one of the driest regions of France (in terms of the amount of precipitation - about 500 mm/year), and the “ballons” part of the Vosges mountains, the ratio is 1 to 4. This is a perfect illustration of the fœhn effect that protects the Alsatian plain from the prevailing western winds. Winters are long and snowy, and mornings are almost as cool on the Alsatian plain as in the Vosges, while maximum temperatures vary greatly in the summer. The plain benefits from 40 to 50 warm days a year. Tourist accommodation capacity: Number of hotel beds: 2,848 in Colmar, 3,726 for Colmar and the urban area Other accommodation: 357 beds in Colmar, 1,122 beds for Colmar and the urban area (figures supplied by the Chamber of Commerce) Sources: City of Colmar (figures 2003/2004), www.meteofrance.fr
