EUR 1) Oberrheinischer Museumspass Augustiner Museum The city’s largest museum owes its name to its location, the former monastery of the Augustinian hermits. It houses art from the Upper Rhine region ranging from artefacts from Freiburg churches and monasteries to sculptures, paintings and stained glass. The original sculptures from Freiburg Cathedral as well as many samples of arts and crafts from different ages and pictures of Freiburg’s beautiful surrounding area have found a new home at Augustiner Museum. Münsterplatz 30 Tel. ++49 (0) 761 201 - 2515 Museum of Modern Art The Museum of Modern Art houses the municipal collection of art of the 20th century, with a focus on expressionism, new functionalism and abstract art of the 1950s. It also regularly shows exhibitions of younger generation artists. The Department of Ethnology houses a selection of objects of everyday life, art and religion, reflecting the way of life of non-European cultures. The exhibits from America, Oceania, Africa and Asia do not merely give an insight into traditional life but also illustrate the changes these cultures are going through. The Department of Natural History gives an insight into both local and exotic flora and fauna. The gem cabinet, the collection of minerals and fossils as well as the bird room enjoy great popularity. The showcase of archaeological research in the Upper and High Rhine area offers interesting insights into the Stone Age, showing the first known works of art produced in the region, the Bronze Age, the Age of the Celts represented by the sensational prince’s tomb of Ihringen, and the Roman Age documented by the most beautiful mural painting ever found north of the Alps. And, last but not least, the treasure chamber of the Alemannics. Tin Figure Cabinet Freiburg’s smallest museum houses more than 8,000 lovingly hand-painted tin figures depicting historic scenes from the city’s and region’s history, such as the battle near Sempach in 1836. There is a massive collection of data, ranging from 13th century documents to hand-written notes, invoices, last wills and photographs, as well as files not originating in the city itself. An important part of the City Archives’ work consists of assisting users. Research is carried out on written or verbal request, and readers visiting the library are assisted with their research.
